Book Review (and Giveaway!): OMG That’s Paleo? by Juli Bauer

OMG! I have been so excited about this cookbook release! OMG! I am so excited to share it with you! OMG! I know you’re going to love it as much as I do.

I’ve been a fan of Juli Bauer’s blog, PaleOMG, for a long time. I read it just as much for her hilarious writing and random Seinfeldian stories as for the delicious recipes. Sometimes her humor sticks with me and makes me laugh long after I read it (example: I once cooked a recipe of hers that called for “1 can coconut milk, full fat (duh!)” and now whenever I see a recipe calling for 1 can coconut milk, I always mentally add “full fat (duh!)”)

So when she announced she was publishing a cookbook, I was beyond thrilled. I was even considering shelling out cash to buy a copy, when the publisher kindly offered to send a review copy* for me…..and a giveaway copy for you! (Details follow the post)

In true Juli Bauer style, her cookbook is chock full of recipes that will make you drool and stories that will make you laugh out loud while standing at the stove, and she serves both with a tasteful amount of gritty profanity. OMG That’s Paleo? contains 100 of Juli’s completely Paleo, completely delicious recipes. Many come from her blog, but 30 of them are brand-spanking new and exclusive to the cookbook.

If you’re not familiar with Juli’s blog or recipes, you’ll find her cooking style to be quick, tasty, and completely fabulous. Her dishes use accessible ingredients, regular kitchen tools, and the food is–how do I say this?–“normal”. She does not make you feel guilty for buying beef that is not grass-fed. She does not shame you for eating a sugary mango. She does not tell you to give up chocolate, or pancakes, or coffee. And she does not try to convince you that vegetables that taste bad, actually taste good. In short, she makes Paleo cooking approachable and accessible to everyone.

As I browsed the book for the first time, I flagged dozens of recipes that I wanted to try. I bitterly regretted my Autoimmune Protocol diet restrictions that would prevent me from cooking a batch of Maple Bacon Pecan Pumpkin Donuts, which look like Paleo sticky buns. Even with all the things I’m not allowed on the AIP Diet, there are still many recipes that I was excited about trying–Pumpkin Pie Apple Dip, Pumpkin Freezer Fudge (I used coconut butter instead of almond butter), Honey Ginger Apple Shredded Pork, Sage Bison Burgers with Balsamic Bacon Apple Chutney.

The change of seasons has me craving quick, simple food and I was thrilled to see that Juli has that covered, too–Apple Jicama Salad, Cuban Turkey Roll-Ups, Grilled Swordfish with Peach and Avocado Salsa, Avocado Cilantro Chicken Salad, Peach and Basil Grilled Pork Chops. So delicious and so simple!

Each recipe has a color photo with it, and a place to make notes about changes you made to the recipe (handy for people like me who change recipes and can’t remember what we did).

My favorite Paleo recipe of all time? It happens to be included in Juli’s cookbook, and it’s on her blog. Click over to PaleOMG to find Juli’s Banana Bread French Toast Recipe. I made this french toast last year for Christmas morning breakfast. I fed a table of 10 people with diet needs ranging from diabetic to low-carb vegetarian to my own long list of food intolerances, and an age range of 2 to 65 years old. Everyone gobbled it up and everyone wished I’d made more. Use your Plan to Eat bookmarklet tool to import it into your PTE account (what, you don’t know about the PTE bookmarklet tool? Read about it here.)

Juli’s book is getting a permanent place on my cookbook shelf. Since I’ve received it, I’ve cooked from it several times a week. And I’m looking forward to lots more tasty PaleOMG goodness in the future.
